Finding Time

I am really new to this whole parenting thing. I'm still learning how to take care of my baby, my home, and myself at the same time. I love spending time with my little man, but I miss being able to do certain things that I had before taken for granted. Mostly, I miss having the time to write.

Many of you have been right where I'm at. So I thought I would ask you for advice.

What is the secret?

How do you find time to write, when its hard to even find the time to brush your teeth?

Practice, Practice, Practice!

I play the trumpet.

That's not news to anyone who knows me. I've been doing so since I was ten. I've even posted about it here before.

I remember the early years, when my parents compared my playing to the sound of a dying elephant.They might have been right. At the time, however, I envisioned making beautiful music. My imagination had me on the stage, playing a solo with a full symphony accompanying me, and the conductor delighted just to have me there. Did I mention that trumpet players typically have ego issues?

I wanted to be the best trumpet player that there ever was, or at least get through "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" without playing a wrong note. To do so, I had to do something I dreaded.

Practice.

Until I put in the time, I was never going to get the result that I wanted. Natural talent will only go so far, the rest is just hard work.

I've been reminded of this principle recently as I was teaching some of my own trumpet students. They want to play "real" music, but aren't willing to put in the time to get them to that place. They want the rewards without the hard work. I find myself getting frustrated when I see how little they practice.

And then I think about myself.

I want to be a published novelist. I have visions of a book with my name on the cover. Am I putting in the time to accomplish that goal? Am I giving my best, and working hard?

Excelling at anything takes practice, and I do want to excel. What about you?

Back in the Saddle

I'm not much of a horsewoman, but I enjoy a quiet ride now and again.

As a child, my grandmother would often take me riding. I loved being on the trails on the back of a horse. It was exciting and a little scary all at the same time.

I remember my delight the first time I was given the reins, and allowed to control the horse all by myself. A whole word of adventure open up for me. I was in charge. Of course, the horse was old and calm, and I couldn't have gotten it to trot if I wanted to, but that didn't matter.

That sense of wonder and adventure has stayed with me, and though I don't get to ride often, I still feel the same thrill when I sit in the saddle.

Writing gives me a similar thrill. When I put my fingers on the keyboard, I feel the same excitement. I've got the reigns, I'm in control, but this time I can go into a full out gallop if I want. I find so much joy in creating stories.

After a long dry spell, I'm again creating the stories that I love. It feels so good to be back in the saddle. It's exciting and a little scary.

I've missed this.

I truly believe that writing is God's calling for my life at this time. I wondered if that would change once my baby was born, but it hasn't. I still feel the draw of the story. I still feel the need to create. I can't ignore the gifts that God has given.

Within the last month I've started working on the revisions for my current novel project, Hope's Child. Things are moving slow, but they are moving. Each time that I work on the novel, it gets easier to get lost in it. I'm gaining momentum, and soon I hope to move from a walk to a trot, and eventually to a gallop.

My new job as mother takes most of my day. It is difficult to find the time (and energy) to write. But I have to. I've realized, if I don't make the time, I'll never have it. So, even now, as I write this post, my baby is in my arms.

Can I get that saddle built for two?

No NaNo

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

I first encountered NaNoWriMo four years ago, and jumped in with both feet. What a blast! 50,000 words in 30 days.

I worked hard, and completed the rough draft of a novel in the designated time. I loved the challenged and experience, so when the next NaNo rolled around, it was a no-brainer, I was in.

Three years, and three successful NaNos latter, I found myself facing this November. It was a hard decision, but based on my current situation, this was the year of No NaNo. It's been hard watching from the sidelines, but it reminded me how much I love this program, and how much I'm going to enjoy participating again next year.

To all my NaNoing friends whether you reach your goal today or not, great job!

Writing Prompt

A few years ago, I had an opportunity to attend a writing workshop. As a warm-up writing exercise, we were given this prompt:

Write about a piece of clothing describing you as a child.

Here is what I wrote.

She ran as I clung desperately to her slim frame, my hem flapping wildly in the breeze. Why was she always running? Why couldn't she sit still like the other little girls and chat about boys and gossip about friends? I'm sure their dresses were not rumpled. I longed for the serenity.

I had been clean when she tugged me on, freshly laundered. The grass stains and muddy spots gone, my very substance rubbed thin from her mother's excessive scrubbing. Over and over the good woman had muttered: "Will she never be a lady?" I wondered the same thing as we tore down the path.

Weeds, thistles, thorns pulled at my seams as we raced on. Around and around. Chasing, running, hiding, falling, jumping, dancing - while the other girls sat calmly on the church steps, bouquets of flowers in their hands.

Outlining Fun

I hate outlining!

I never outline for a first draft. I usually know how a story starts and the general direction that it is heading, but I don't sit down and write out every step along the way. For me, outlining leaves no room for creativity and imagination to work while the story is coming to life. Outlines take a lot of of the fun and mystery out of the first draft.

However, once the first draft is done, I usually sit down and write and outline.

This not my favorite part of the writing process. Outlining is drudgery. But it is necessary. Outlining helps me know that all the parts of the story come together and nothing is left hanging.

I've been stuck for several months (read over a year) on my current WIP because I needed to write out the outline for the next draft. Did I mention that I hate outlining?

Usually, I sit down and write out the whole outline in a notebook in pencil so that I could move things around and make changes as I thought of them. The outline is several pages long, full of erased marks, smudges, and arrows (when I got tired of erasing and rewriting). It's a lot of work, as anyone who has done it knows. This time, I just couldn't make myself do it. I needed something different. Something that allowed me to see the whole story at once.

This is what I came up with.

What is it? This is my "storyboard" outline of Hope's Child, my WIP.

I took a 2'x3' cork board and sectioned it off with string to make 32 boxes. Each box represents a chapter in my WIP. I then got different colored index cards and quartered them. Each color represents a different part of the story. I love to be able to easily follow plot points in this way.

Making a storyboard outline took the same amount of time (if not a little longer since I was learning as I went) as making a regular outline, but I like the finished product a whole lot better. I may never go back to writing my outlines out in longhand.

Small Package, Big Responsibility

Big changes have come to the Banks household. On August 23rd, my husband and I welcomed a little miracle into our family. Our firstborn son.

Only minutes after birth

Eleven weeks later, we are still amazed at the wonder of this precious bundle that God has entrusted to our care.

Life is slowly getting into a routine, allowing me to take some time and update this blog. I have grand ideas about what I want to accomplish here and with my writing, but I'm also realistic. This baby takes a lot of time. Time that I willingly give.

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

Don't just write about what you know. I know, I know...you've heard other author's say it; you've heard your teachers preach it: write what you know. And the theory behind that advice is good. Write about what you know because you have the inside info, the details, and the experience to write about that topic or field. You play county soccer? Good, now go write a story about a character who plays county soccer. You have piano practice every Thursday? Wonderful, now go write about a character who plays piano. Now that's fine advice if you're writing for an audience of one or two. Will it work to get you published? Uh...not so much.

Writing what you know will not get you published unless, of course, your day job is: CIA Code Breaker, Supernatural Phenomenon Investigator, CSI Agent, or Tour Guide for the Amazon Jungle. What I'm saying is, the average, day to day life is not interesting enough to be the plot of a book. Now, if something interrupts that normal life: a tragedy, a phenomenon, a mystery--well, now we're talking. Most readers want a story to grab them, to move them, to take them places they've never been to before. Most publishers want the same thing.

So, how do you write about stuff you don't know? 1. Research: watch the Discovery Channel, read National Geographic, surf the World Wide Web--there's a novel plot, character, or setting just waiting for you. 2. Make it up: Now, this especially applies to the whacked lot of writers who want to write fantasy or scifi. You get to open your mind and just create. Make things the human eye has never seen before. Tweak reality. Have fun. Chances are, if you have fun, your readers will too.

My one bit of advice would be, "Don't get it right, get it written." I heard someone say this years ago when I was struggling to get started. At the time, I wrote the first three chapters over and over, editing and polishing, then I'd lose interest in the rest of the book and not finish. This piece of advice changed everything for me. Once I decided to write the whole first draft without judgment, and without going back to rewrite, I was able to keep my momentum building and finish a book. THEN I could begin rewriting. But once I get the first draft down, rewriting is easy. No matter how much rewriting is needed, I know I can do it because I've already written the whole book once.

It sounds so cliche, but it's the truth: Be true to yourself. But what does that mean? It means don't write something just because you think other people will like it. If it doesn't inspire you, chances are it won't inspire other people either. Every day, I can't wait to sit down and start typing, and that gets me through the hard places along the winding road. I couldn't do that if I was trying to guess what people wanted. They'd probably want Chick Lit or something and I'd just butcher it anyway, so I'm way better off writing what I LIKE, which is THRILLERS. Forget "write what you know". Write what you LOVE. Write whatever gets you fired up enough to stay up all night fueled by nothing more than Mountain Dew and Twinkies and a blinding passion to find out what happens to your characters next. And write, dang-nab-it, write!! Stop telling all your friends about the book you're GOING TO WRITE, the one you're going to bang out after the entire world has stopped in silence long enough for you to get inspired and WRITE!!

I know it's hard. Believe me I know. I'm reading this back right now and wishing I was further ahead on my next book than I am. (But don't you worry, anyone from Thomas Nelson, if you read this, because I'm going to freaking ROCK this next book!) But just stick with it! Stay in front of that sheet of paper or computer screen or stone tablet or WHATEVER long enough for at least one sentence to make a landing. Because that's all it takes. Just a little at a time. It's not going to happen all at once, so just knock a little of the wall down every day, and soon the waters of creativity will flood. Ok, I know I'm rambling now, but it's just because I really care about this stuff and I know you do too. I never thought I had a chance in the world to get a book out there, and now that I do (pinch me) it just proves that anyone can do it! Anyone!! You...me...the neighbor's dog (provided the little mutt has the necessary verbal skills).......ANYONE!!

My advice for writing? Easy. Write. Write every day. If you want to be a writer, write. Don't talk about it, don't dream about it, don't read about it (they all help but only a little). Write. Don't wait for inspiration or look for excuses. Do it whether you feel like it or not. Carve out two hours before work and write. Or carve out two hours after the kids are in bed and write. If not two hours one. If not one, thirty minutes. If not thirty minutes, fifteen. If not fifteen look for something else to do. I never think of writing a book, just writing for six hours, six days a week and eventually it turns into a book, or short story, or article. But it never would happen if I didn't write, re-write and keep writing.

I would tell aspiring authors to read.

Read the classics. Read books on writing. Read books in your genre. I can't tell you how often I meet prospective authors who are writing fiction yet state that they don't like to read fiction. This is a huge red flag for me. I want to know that the reader has read their competition and has a grasp on the market. I want them to be reading classics and comparing different writing styles. Reading will not alter your ability to have a unique voice. It will enhance your unique voice and help you find ways to make it stronger.

There’s so much good advice already posted here, but the one thing I would add is to make sure you know what your hook is. If you can’t distill your story into one or two sentences that immediately pique someone’s curiosity, the idea probably needs to stew in your creative juices for awhile longer. What makes your story stand out from everything else that is coming across an editor’s desk? And from all the other books on the shelves? Keep finessing and dreaming until you hit on that element that makes your novel fresh, unique, and so compelling that it can’t be passed by.

It's tough to come up with one thing without cheating. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Steve Laube and Andy McGuire.) And tough to come up with something that hasn't already been said.

But I do have one thing that I think is very important when it comes to the lifestyle of being an aspiring novelist. Communication is cheap, and as a result, there's plenty of recycled wisdom and free praise to be had, especially online. Disconnect from the web and spend your time at your local library. Read and savor the brilliant writers of the past fifty years. Study classic writing instruction from authors who are experienced and knowledgeable (my standbys are Orson Scott Card on characters and viewpoint and Obstfeld's book on crafting scenes). Watch great TV and film. Writing (and storytelling) is an art form, like painting, dancing, playing the piano. Before a pianist makes a public performance, there's usually a decade or so of private lessons and intense personal study of history, heroes, technique. Very few are brilliant enough to sit down one day and play Rachmaninoff, or in our case, write well.

My mom would call this "always having your nose stuck in a book". And that's my advice.

If I had only one thing to say to aspiring writers, I'd tell them not to make my mistake of writing one book then sending it out for YEARS before starting another. Finish a book, edit it to the best of your ability, send it out, then MOVE TO A NEW STORY. If I'd done that, it wouldn't have taken me seven years to be published. I had all my eggs in that one basket and was desperate to have that particular book published. When the rejections came back, I'd rework it and send it out again. And again. And again. You get the picture. LOL

You learn more about writing by writing. Reading books and attending conferences (while all good and necessary to my mind) aren't substitutes for actually DOING it.

What would I say to an aspiring novelist?

Develop a thick skin. A piece of published writing is not a solo but rather a duet between you and your editor. My 175th book will release this summer --Riven, a novel about a death row inmate who chooses crucifixion as his method of execution -- and I still rely heavily on my

editor.

It seems our very lives and senses of self worth are on every page, but if we are writing for only admiration and acceptance, we should send our stuff to people who love us. If we want to be published, however, and see our best work reach the public, we must be open to that fresh second set of eyes on our precious words.

Sure it hurts, and we'd all like to think we can someday reach the point where what we consider our final draft is what flies from our screen to the printed page. A thick skin allows us to set aside our pain for the sake of a better finished product.

That said, never submit anything until you are wholly happy with it. There will still be plenty for editors to catch without expecting them to correct things you should have caught.

When you get to its end, will you be where you intended?

Advice for Novelists: Jeff Gerke

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

If I were sitting across the table from an aspiring novelist who needed the first bit of guidance, I would tell him to learn his craft.

Some things about the path of a novelist can't be taught. Perseverance, for instance. An abundance of story and character ideas. A tale burning a hole in your heart. But the craft of fiction can be taught, and the novelist who does not commit himself to years in pursuit of its mastery might as well spend the time doing something else. Like playing video games.

I have worked with aspiring authors who have a wonderful story idea and heroic commitment to the hard work of writing a long story. They sacrifice time and energy, gladly paying the opportunity costs involved in writing a novel. And at the other end of the process they come out with a finished manuscript. But the problem is that they never learned how to do what they're attempting, and the result is a high-concept, diligently typed-up mess.

I liken it to a farmer who decides he will build a majestic Gothic cathedral. His goal is worthy and there is no questioning his heart. With endurance he labors long and alone to construct the object of his aspirations. But because he doesn't know what in the world he's doing, his cathedral ends up looking like a disaster.

Can you fault his heart or his desire? Never. But he should've read a book first. He should've gotten help. He should've learned his craft.

So it is with novelists. If you've got the story and the commitment to see the job through to the end, you've got more going for you than most people who say they're going to write a book one of these days. But it's not enough. You have to know what you're doing.

My Fiction Writing Tip of the Week column is written with the aspiring novelist in mind. If you read and heed what I say there, you will learn the essentials--show vs. tell, POV, good characters, good dialogue, etc.--and you will learn advanced techniques and everything in between. Someone who truly adheres to what I've written there will very soon find his fiction craftsmanship improving by leaps and bounds.

I would also recommend that this aspiring author get objective opinions about his fiction. Whether that's from his mom or wife, a critique group, or a book doctor (like me), if it helps him get a better grasp on how to improve as a novelist, it's a good thing.

The story ideas will still be there, and hopefully so will the determination to write it. But it won't be until these admirable qualities are combined with an elevated mastery of the craft of fiction that he will find himself publishable.

I grew up with the Adventures in Odyssey radio series. I wasn't their most faithful listener, but I did listen often and enjoyed all that I heard. Advice for Novelists: Nick Harrison

For those new to this series, C.J. Darlington asked editors, agents, authors, and publicists to answer this question:

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

The one thing I would say is that becoming a successful writer is a result of doing many things; some easy, some hard. First is to make sure this is what God wants you to do. Then trust that He will open any necessary doors for you to succeed. Then, write from your heart. Write with passion. As Thomas Carlyle said, "If a book comes from the heart, it will contrive to reach other hearts. "

Be willing to do a lot of REwriting. Every novel should take several drafts. Be willing to learn how to improve your writing. Attend writer's conferences, read the writer's magazines, join a critique group--do whatever you can to immerse yourself in the world of writers and writing. Steel yourself for rejection. READ, READ, READ. Allow what you read to affect your own writing style.

Having done all these things, the best thing that can happen is for God to bring along that one editor who gets what you're trying to do with your writing. A good match between an author and his or her editor is indeed made in heaven. There's a saying that goes, "when the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear." For Christians writers, that might be edited to read: "When the writer is ready, the editor will appear." Be patient and keep praying, reading, writing, and submitting.

Send no proposal out before its time.

Make your manuscript as strong as it can be before you send it out. With competition as fierce as it is nowadays, we're looking for manuscripts that have a spark. Something that jumps out and grabs us, be it the uniqueness of the plot, an especially engaging character, or writing that is so strong it grabs from the first paragraph. I've seen multitudes of manuscripts that are "almost" there, and have rejected nearly all of them. "Almost" isn't good enough any more. Don't let your desire to be published override your determination to refine your craftsmanship to the nth degree. Remember, God's task for us is to write, not to be published. Focus on fulfilling that task to the very best of your abilities--and leave what happens from there to His good will and timing.

Times are Changing

Things have been quiet here on my blog. It's my fault. You see, I've not been on here much, other than to post the next installment of a series. There's a reason for my absence. I've been trust into a new stage of life. On December 12th, my husband and I found out that we're going to have a baby.

Very exciting times!

With this wonderful news came a slight change in focus for me. I went from creating literary children, to incubating a flesh and blood child. While this process has been a huge blessing, I also find that it has it's disadvantages as well. Namely, my creativity has gone AWOL. I haven't really written anything since I saw the two pink lines on that little white stick.

I've been a terrible mother to my literary children.

This neglect is not unique to my writing, in fact every area of creativity has suffered. I just can't seem to keep my mind on anything but the precious bundle that is coming in August. At the same time, I don't want to waste the next five months waiting for baby's due date.

It is time for a change!

Starting at the beginning of April, I am going to post a list of my writing goals here on the sidebar of this blog.

We've heard from authors, agents and editors, but here's advice from a publicist's perspective. Dave Bartlett from Harvest House stopped to share his response to the question:

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

The phrase "show me, don't tell me" regarding creative, descriptive writing was drilled into my brain by a wonderful college professor (and it obviously stuck). Also, do your research, make your characters believable, lovable, detestable, whatever, but make them believable-- you want, really, need the reader to become emotionally attached to your characters. The same goes for your scenes and settings, they need to be realistic.
Other thoughts I would share to encourage the aspiring writer is to write, write, and write. Don't stop writing. Also, become a serious student of your craft, read and review other people's work, get involved with other writers and writing groups and organizations. An excellent example of this kind of involvement is found in one of my favorite Harvest House authors, Brandt Dodson, a gentleman with an incredibly strong, seemingly tireless, work ethic.

Here's agent Chip's response to:

"Write with verbs and nouns."

I read that advice in Strunk and White's Elements of Style back in high school, and it's still the best bit of writing advice I've ever heard. Too many writers will show me flowery, painted-up hoo-haw that has lots of description and plenty of color, but no power. To add punch to your writing, cut it back. Clean it up. Spend the time selecting the right nouns so you don't have to prop them up with adjectives in an attempt to clarify them. Give me direct verbs, so you aren't trying to dress up your weak writing with adverbs. Verbs and nouns -- that's where the story is told.

In a perfect world it would be all about the quality of the writing. But the truth be known perseverance and dedication has probably made more writers than raw talent. At any given time even with a terrific manuscript there may be only one perfect place in the whole publishing industry for a project at that exact point in time, yet a large majority of writers give up before they knock on the right door to find that fit. It's like the old TV show Laugh-in where people would pop out of a window and deliver a line, then somebody would open another window down the row and answer them. A window opens, there is a place for a project, one comes in and it closes only to have another window open down the way. We have to find that open window before the quality of the writing comes into play.

Finish the novel. Then write another one. And then, write another one. During this time you can look for an agent. You have to have an agent. No publishers will look at you otherwise. If you give up after your first book, you were never meant to be an author. If you give up after the second one, you still were never meant to be an author. Publishing requires writing and writing and writing. When you have three complete novels, you probably will be published. My fourth novel was published.

Surprise me. Think of an opening line that sounds like nothing you've heard before. Then follow that up with another. Then the next one. And the next. Come up with unique ways to introduce characters and plot elements. Find fresh metaphors and new insights. Avoid everything that

sounds like you've heard it before. If your manuscript continues to surprise me, I'll continue to read it. Guaranteed. Novels are a reader's way of vacationing in someone else's mind for awhile. If it feels familiar, what's the point?

Practice being creative. It's not easy, but it can be done. Daydream about outlandish things. Look at something familiar and try to come up with a bizarre metaphor to describe it. Forget the mechanics of writing for awhile and try to concentrate on saying new things in new ways.

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

Just one thing, really?

I'm an editor at WaterBrook, but in my free time, I'm an unpublished

novelist.

So I've developed these 3 steps to writing fiction that I call my "formula" and interestingly, all of them essentially come down to one thing. Masochistic devotion. I don't know how universal this is-and it's certainly not natural. But I'm a little weird, which doesn't hurt in this profession. And while it's taken me a while to hammer out the 3 steps, something like 8 years, maybe 9, I've never seen anything like this in all the top recommended writing and editing books, which are great. Until I translated all that advice into my own steps and practice, I never felt I was writing my best stuff. You know, not really. And I don't really know if I'm writing my best now, but it feels different, like I've passed the point of no return and it'd be harder to stop now than it would be to keep going.

Kind of like love.

I think the most important thing in writing novels is to deeply love what you're writing. I mentioned this recently on my blog (www.yourwritersgroup.com), but it got me thinking that novels are kind of unique in that they require the deepest, even spiritual, kind of love. A spouse or a child doesn't always need your all in every scene. But a novel? It can completely fail if you don't devote to it consistently and vigilantly. Novels are incredibly demanding, so much so that those with young families or big relational responsibilities need to seriously consider whether it's prudent. You need to be able to separate because this spiritual sort of love requires you to die to self, pick up your "cross," and follow that creation where it takes you. You are, in a sense, practicing the gospel in your daily writing practice. It's no longer you who lives, but that new work happening in you and coming through you. By extension, your novel can speak of God because you've "died" to give it life.

That's the basic idea. I want to stop well clear of any heresy. This can start to sound theologically dicey, especially considering how easily novels can become our gods if we aren't careful. The bottom line is, the way we approach both spiritual matters and our novels must be with reverence and acceptance of the ultimate cost. This is the only way I know of to write the novels that truly connect and speak with relevance to the deeper truths of life.

The biggest mistake I see novelists making is trying to get published too soon. My Native American friend Russell Means used to tell me, "It takes the time it takes." He was always trying to get me to stop rushing. Now that mantra sticks in my mind when I find myself trying to force something before its time.

Becoming a novelist takes a serious investment in time as well as resources. Make sure you're ready. You must master the craft of writing if you want people to pay you for it. Attend writers' conferences and take writing workshops. Edit, rewrite and polish your book. Get critiques and feedback. Trade manuscripts with writing friends and get some good advice. Consider hiring a freelance editor. Read books about writing. Make sure you've done everything humanly possible to make your book the best it can be---take your time and get it right. THEN seek publication by pitching agents and editors. You'll find more success, and agents/editors will be less frustrated. A win-win all around!

A great story is the key. A fresh story is even better! We are deluged by unsolicited proposals with stories that all sound the same. But every once in a while comes that great story with a fresh take and style. Next month look for My Name Is Russell Fink by Michael Snyder (Zondervan) as an example of something that fits that criteria. In addition see When the Heart Cries by Cindy Woodsmall (Waterbrook), Dinner With A Perfect Stranger by David Gregory (Waterbrook), The Secret Life of Becky Miller by Sharon Hinck (Bethany House), and Coldwater Revival by Nancy Jo Jenkins. All these titles are debut novelists that captured the attention and imagination of

our agency.

As one fiction teacher put it, "Create a plot...not a plod." (Carol Gift Page)

Try to avoid starting the novel with back-story. This is a common mistake. Makes the opening boring to read.

Another key to great fiction is the use of dialogue. The character's voice must come through as distinct from other characters in the scene. This is a very difficult thing to do, and only the great writers pull it off.

Which brings me to my last point. We see a LOT of really good writers. But we like to only represent the great ones. We have placed a dozen debut novelists over the last three years. We are always looking for the "next best."

Arnold Palmer said golf came down basically to this: hit it, find it, then hit it again. Well, writing is sort of like that, too. Write it, edit it, then write it again. When you write, don't be hung up on making it perfect. Don't be bollixed up on writing techniques. The golfer who thinks of 22 different things as he swings always muffs it. Write hot, revise cool. When you edit your work, get feedback: from readers, from a group, or just by reading a writing book and seeing how the techniques apply to you. Then, with what you learn, write it again. Or start a new project. Each time you do this, you get a little better. Keep after it.

Finish your novel! I often hear from novelists who have a complete marketing plan, list of endorsers, and brand strategy—but only three chapters of their novel completed. It is very difficult for an editor to evaluate your work if it’s not complete. What does a complete manuscript mean? First, it tells me that you can finish a book. Second, it tells me whether you know the mechanics of writing. Third, it tells me if you have the ability to flesh out the characters and keep my attention. Finish your novel! Anything else is a distraction.

"The Widow Next Door"

Cindy and the other members of the church youth choir mingled with the folks from the Bay View nursing home. The teens listened, offering smiles and encouragement, as the elderly retold tales of yesteryear. Conversations about the depression, World War II, aches, pains, medication, surgical procedures and death flew about the room as everyone feasted on the Christmas cookies the choir brought with them.

“Form up!” Pastor Randy called out from the front of the big room.

Grateful for the excuse, Cindy extracted herself from a wheel-chair bound gentleman who had been telling her for the last twenty minutes that someone had stolen his cows. The short, dark haired girl took her place on the front right side of the choir. She waited as a few stragglers found their spots in the formation.

As the last strains of “We wish you a merry Christmas” echoed in the large room, the residence applauded heartily.

“Merry Christmas” the teenagers called, as they filed neatly out the door, relieved to be once again in the cold December air, away from the disturbing smells of antiseptic and urine.

Pastor Randy stood next to the bus’s open door. “Can’t you guys move any faster?” He teased as the group rushed to get their favourite seats. Cindy held back from the rest.

“P.R. what are we doing next?” she asked him, after all the others had boarded.

“Heading back to the church for some pizza and games.”

“Do you think we could add one more stop?” Cindy asked quietly.

“I don’t know, Cindy. What do you have in mind?”

“Well, my neighbour, Mrs. Thomas. See, her husband died earlier this year, and this is going to be her first Christmas all alone. Their house was always, like, the best decorated on our whole street. This year, there isn’t sign of a Christmas light anywhere. I was just thinking, maybe, we could, perhaps stop by her house and sing her a few songs. It is right on the way back to the church. It really wouldn’t take that much time.” Cindy bit her bottom lip as she waited for the youth pastor’s response.

“Well, let’s see what everyone else thinks of this.”

Cindy got on the bus and took a seat. Pastor Randy stood in the center aisle and explained Cindy’s request. A cheer of approval erupted as the choir members embraced the idea of an impromptu concert.

“I guess we’re going to see Mrs. Thomas.” P.R. said, taking his seat behind the wheel. “Cindy, could you pass out the batter operated candles while I drive over there. Everyone make sure that your batteries are still working. We want to look like real Christmas carollers tonight!”

Everyone was ready as the bus parked on the street in front of 157 Maple Dr. The house was dark.

“Are you sure she’s home?” Pastor Randy asked.

“She’s there.” Cindy confirmed, pointing to a dim light in one of the upstairs windows.

The youth filed quietly out of the bus. Shuffling through the ankle-deep snow they found their places.

“Okay you guys,” Pastor Randy whispered. “Let’s brighten up Mrs. Thomas’s holiday.” On P.R.’s signal they switched on their candles and began singing “Silent Night”.

Cindy watched as a shadow moved toward the upstairs window. Soon, the thin figure of the widow was silhouetted in the frame. Cindy held her candle closer to her face and gave a friendly wave. Mrs. Thomas did not wave back. She was too busy wiping the tears from her eyes.

Shocking Recommendations

I finally finished my Christian Writers Guild (CWG) Apprentice course. It has been a long, and sometimes difficult journey, but I have learned so much from these lessons and have seen my writing grow in ways I could have only imagined before.

Earlier this week I turned in my last lesson, and waited patiently (well, that might be the wrong word) for my mentor to comment on it. This morning I received his comments and my end of course evaluation.

Here is a little of what what on that evaluation.

Student's strengths: (I'm trying not to let these go to my head)

1. Excellent imagination, especially for plotting fiction
2. Handles dialogue very well
3. Great spirit and enthusiasm for a writing ministry
4. Good basic skills (grammar, syntax)

Where student needs to improve:

1. Hard to say. Certainly Christina's strength is fiction, and so I'd encourage her to focus on that area. Always room for improvement on self-editing, tightening copy, etc.

It was his recommendation that completely blew my socks off. Instead of recommending me for the Journeyman course (as I was anticipating), my mentor believes that I am ready to tackle the Craftsman course.

I'm not sure that I'm ready for that huge step yet, but I will be thinking on it and talking it over with my husband. I'm sure it is going to take us some time to decide what to do. In the meantime, I'm going to bask in the glow of a job well done, and pull out my novel manuscript and get to work on revisions.

"The Me Inside of Me"

Grandpa is dead; at least that’s what Mama told me. We just saw him on Saturday at his apartment. He gave me a handful of M&M’s from his secret hiding place – the drawer of his bedside table. I like the red ones the best and Grandpa always saves them for me. I wonder who will give me red M&M’s now.

I know all about death. My goldfish died last winter, and Daddy flushed it down the toilet. Then in the summer, my puppy got hit by a car. I cried a lot longer for my puppy than I did for Goldie. Dead is forever. That must be why Mama’s so sad.

Grandpa once told me that he was looking forward to dying. He said that when he died, he would go to heaven and live with Jesus and Grandma. Grandpa told me all about heaven. He said that the streets are paved with real gold – not like the ring that turns my finger green – and there are gates made out of pearls. Mama has a pearl necklace that she wears when Daddy takes her out to dinner. I think heaven sounds like a wonderful place.

Daddy says we’re going somewhere to see Grandpa. How can we see Grandpa when he’s in heaven? Maybe they have Skype in heaven, and we can talk to Grandpa like we do Aunt Lydia and Uncle Jim. I wonder if we can talk to Grandma and Jesus too.

Mama takes my hand and walks with me toward a building. I’ve never been here before. Mama says I have to be on my best behavior. That means I have to walk, use my indoor voice, and be polite. I hope we don’t have to stay long. This place smells funny – kinda like Great Aunt Ethel’s house. I wrinkle my nose, but Mama gives me The Look when I start to complain.

We are standing in a big room. There are a lot of people here. Near the front I see a long wooden box, with lots of flowers around it. Aunt Lydia, Uncle Jim and my cousins standing there too. What are they doing outside of the computer? I want to run to them and play, but Mama keeps a tight hold on my hand.

Everyone is dressed up for church, but my teacher said it’s Tuesday. I want to ask Daddy about it, but he tells me to shush. I wonder if we have to wait in line to talk to Grandpa. I hate waiting in line. Yesterday, I had to wait in line for a drink at the water fountain, and Randy Cassidy kept pushing me. I don’t like Randy Cassidy.

Finally, we make it to the front of the room. Aunt Lydia hugs Daddy and Mama, and then she squeezes me tight. I can hardly breathe. When she lets me go, Daddy picks me up. Now I can see in the box. Grandpa’s sleeping in there. What a funny place to sleep. I say so to Daddy.

“Oh Pumpkin,” Daddy says, “Grandpa’s not sleeping. Remember, Grandpa’s in heaven with Grandma and Jesus.” This makes Mama cry again.

“But he’s not in heaven.” I say. “I can see him right there.” I point to the box.

“Grandpa’s body is still here, but the real part of Grandpa - the part that lived inside the body - is in heaven with Jesus.”

Daddy’s words swirl around in my head, like clothes in the dryer. Are there really two parts to people? The part you can see, and the part you can’t see? Is there really a me inside of me?

Politician's Wife

Monday was municipal election day here in Deep River. My husband was running for town council. One of the things that I really appreciate about my husband is that when he does something, he gives it everything that he has. We are fairly new to the town, and not a lot of people knew us, but that is no longer the case. My husband knocked on every door in Deep River. He met people face to face, talked with them about their concerns, and formed a relationship with them.

Whenever we walk through town now, someone stops and talks to my husband. It's encouraging to see the confidence that this gives Daniel. Though I have enjoyed my anonymity, it's fun to see him interact with the community.

On Monday night, Daniel and I sat in Town Hall and waited for the results to come in. My husband's hard work has paid off. He was elected to the position of Councillor. Not only that, but he received the highest number of votes. I am so proud of my husband!

"Diagnostic"

Something wasn’t right.

Sharon checked the gages on the dashboard, but nothing looked abnormal. Still, the smell could not be ignored. She glanced in her rear view mirror, straight into the disgruntled face of her best friend.

“What is that stench?” Helen asked, turning up her nose.

“I don’t know.” Sharon admitted. “This has never happened before.”

“Oh man, it’s awful!” Kara complained as she rolled down the window. A blast of freezing night air permeated the car’s interior.

“Shut the window.” Helen yelled. “Are you trying to get us all sick?”

“No, Sharon is. Just smell that.”

“It’s too cold to have the window open. I don’t want to spend the rest of the week in the campus hospital because you subjected me to sub-zero temperatures.” Helen reached over and tried to put the window up. The two started a shoving contest, each trying to get control of the window controls. Sharon shook her head, locked the window, and controlled it from her seat.

“Come on, you two. We’re only two blocks from the dorm. I think we can survive the stink till then.”

“Easy for you to say,” Kara sulked.

Sharon came up to the red light. The street lamps illuminated the hood. She couldn’t see any smoke coming up. Surely that was a good sign. A few moments later, she pulled into the dorm parking lot. The car was barely off when Kara jumped out.

“Thanks for the ride, but I think I’ll take the bus from now on.” Kara pulled her coat close and rushed to the building.

“There’s gratitude for you,” Helen muttered under her breath. “Come on. Let’s get out of the cold.”

“I should check under the hood first.” Sharon pressed the hood release. A cloud of noxious fumes and smoke billowed out. “Oh, that doesn’t look good.”

“What do you thinks’ wrong with it?” Helen asked.

“I have no idea, but my dad will.” Sharon picked up her cell and dialled the number while Helen hopped back and forth. “Go inside. I’ll be in soon.” Helen waved as she rushed to the building.

“Hey, Squirt. What’s going on?”

“My car’s acting up. I was driving back to the dorm tonight and all the sudden there was a horrible smell. I didn’t see any smoke, well not till I got back to the parking lot and opened the hood. I see that something is dripping under the engine. What do you think it is?”

“Describe the smell to me.”

“It was a flat, grey, rectangular smell.” Sharon heard her Dad chuckle. “What’s so funny?”

“How am I supposed to diagnose a smell like that? Come on, explain it to me in English.”

“I’m majoring in art, not automotive repair. All I know is that the smell was toxic.”

“Now, toxic I can work with.”

“So, what’s wrong with it? I need the car for work tomorrow.”

“That might not be happening. Tell me about the dripping.”

Sharon squatted down and peeked. “Yeah, there’s a huge puddle under there.”

“What color is it?”

“How should I know? It’s dark out.”

“Then get a flashlight.”

Sharon found one in her glove box. She got down on her knees and took off her white gloves. Whose idea was it to buy white gloves anyway? She stuffed them into the pocket of her heavy down jacket and then peered under the car.

“What color is it?”

“Green, I think.”

“Antifreeze.”

“Can I drive it?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Squirt. That smell you talked about is probably from the antifreeze dripping onto the hot engine and burning. Those fumes aren’t healthy for you to be inhaling. They’ve been known to cause birth defects in small animals.”

“I’m not planning on birthing any small animals in the near future.”

“That’s good to hear. Listen, you’ve got a good leak going on, from the sounds of things. I don’t want you driving the car till I can come out there and get it fixed for you.”

“But how am I going to get to work?”

“You’ll have to walk, Buttercup.”

“But it’s cold.”

“You’re the one who wanted to go to school in Wisconsin. Besides you only work a block away from the school. You’ll be fine. I’ll see you in a couple of weeks. I love you.”

“Love you too, Dad.” She hung up the phone, kicked the car’s tire, and trudged into the dorm. “This really stinks!”

1. From "Men Are Dumb ....": If you had a theme song that played whenever you walked into a room full of people, what would it be?
I prefer to sneak in unnoticed.

2. From Pam of "Alert And Oriented x 4": Which of your shoes are your absolute favorite, and which are of the object of your most painful shoe-buyer's remorse?
My absolute favorite shoes are these cute little black flats with a bow on the front. I got them for my grandmother's funeral, and in a way, I think of her every time I put them on. I'm not sure I've experienced shoe-buyer's remorse.

3. From Susanne of "Living to Tell the Story": Tell about your favorite birthday celebration that you've personally experienced.
I would have to say that my favorite birthday experience was when I lived in San Francisco and went to see a production of "My Fair Lady" for my birthday. It was wonderful!

Mint chocolate chip - of course!

Can't say that I have. Most of the time, I don't even pay attention to who is playing in what movie.

Glasses. There's no need to even think about this one. I've had both, and really hurts to play trumpet with braces.

Wherever my husband is. It would be nice to live somewhere warmer than Canada though.

I've never been good about sending anything hand-written. I have great intentions, but no follow through.

I would add Ronald Reagan because of his public policies, political stands, and continued presence in the public sphere long after his presidency. Reagan helped make the US a wonderful place for me to grow up.

Write What You Know

Some of the first advice given to aspiring novelists is to write what you know. Writing what you know is sometime more difficult than it sounds. To write what you know, you must be willing to look at difficult and painful memories and pull from your own experience. Delving into the past might unearth skeletons that you might have wished to keep buried. Really writing what you know is like bleeding onto the paper. You'll leave yourself open to relive all the hurt and hope again.

For me, writing what you know isn't easy. Last November, I took part in National Novel Writing Month for the second time. Last year's novel, Hope's Child, was about two women and their struggles to deal with a mix-up at an infertility clinic. I have not personally experienced a mix-up at an infertility clinic, neither have I gone through In Vitro. However, I was writing what I know. You see, I know emotional baggage that comes with infertility.

You don't have to be an expert in a subject to write about it. In our age of computers and internet, it is easy to find information that you might not know. Research is as quick as a click of your mouse. In a few seconds you can have a wealth of information at your fingertips. You can know a lot very fast. I think, however, that writing what you know goes beyond research. It's a willingness to understand your character and implant real emotions into that situation.

Writing what you know can also be therapeutic. Some of you might remember my post last month about my 30th birthday: Death of a Dream. My increasing age brought to light something that I've been afraid to write about, outside of my WIP. In a bold move, I've decided to stop hiding and start talking about infertility. I'm not alone, and perhaps by sharing my story, others will see that they are not alone either.

So, a few weeks ago, I began a new blog where I'm writing what I know. I'm not an expert, but I can research and I can share a bit of myself as I blog about my own journey down the infertility road. If you are interested in reading about it, you can find my blog by clicking on the title: Empty Wombs.

Writing what you know can lay you bare, and leave you vulnerable, but isn't that what great writing is all about?

"Captain Knight's Surprise"

George sliced another piece of beef and placed it in his mouth. The warm meat nearly melted as George chewed. If only he could teach is own cook how to make roast like this. James’ beef was always too dry, and often tasted like old shoe leather. Perhaps George could steal away to the galley and ask the Admiral’s cook what the secret was. Not that it would do James much good. That man could burn water.

“Captain Knight seems to be enjoying the fare.” Admiral Cochrane’s deep timber brought George from his contemplation.

“Yes, Sir.” George said. He wiped his mouth with the linen napkin. “I’ve never had such tender beef.”

“It’s these colonials. They feed their cattle better than their families.” General Ross laughed. “We made sure to refill our stores before setting fire to Washington.”

“I thank you for that.” George said, spearing another piece. As much as he disliked Ross as a man, he had to admit that the General was a great military mind, if too arrogant by half. Ross acted like the burning of Washington had been wholly his achievement. Had not the rest of the men in this room taken part in the bombardment of the colonial’s capital?

“I’m sure we’ll find prime beef in Baltimore as well. It will be easy pickings. The colonials are on the run now that they have seen the real power of the British fleet, and my army.”

“Is it not the King’s army?” George asked. He watched the color rise on Ross’ neck.

“Am I not the King’s right hand here?” Ross demanded. He stood and threw his napkin on the table.

“And we are grateful to have you.” The admiral touched Ross’ shoulder, bringing the man back to a sitting position. “I’m sure Captain Knight meant no offense.” George withered under Cochrane’s stare. He fidgeted in his seat.

“No, Sir. My apologies, General.”

General Ross glared for a moment longer and then turned to speak directly to the Admiral. George was relieved when the conversation turned to strategy. The Admiral and General could talk about battle plans for hours without need of interruption. George could finish this delicious meal in peace.

A movement at the door caught his attention. Three men stood at the portal, a sailor and two colonials. George watched the two men, keenly aware that they were listening to the General’s plans for the Battle of Baltimore with unflagging interest. George cleared his throat, trying to get the General’s attention, but the man seemed to be purposely ignoring him.

“Excuse me, Sirs,” George said, breaking the conversation off in mid-sentence. He was rewarded with a scowl from both men.

“Is there a problem, Captain Knight?” Ross asked with disdain.

George simply nodded toward the door.

“What are these two doing here?” The General asked the sailor.

“We’s found um wavin’ the white flag. They’s wantin to see you, Sir.”

“Admiral Cochrane, I presume.” The taller of the two colonials stepped forward and bowed. “My name is Francis Scott Key. I’m here on an errand for President Madison. I would respectfully ask that you release a certain prisoner, Dr. Beanes, who was taken captive from his home several weeks ago.”

“I’m afraid that is out of the question.” Admiral Cochrane said. “Good day, gentlemen.”

The two men looked at each other, and then reached into his coat pocket. George’s hand reached for the sword at his waist, ready to deflect any attempt on the Admiral’s life. Ross must have had the same thought for he had his hand on his pistol.

“I have here several letters for you to read Admiral. They are from British soldiers whom Dr. Beanes assisted. I believe that you will find them very compelling reading.” The tall man handed the papers over, and stepped back toward the door. George and the others waited as the Admiral read. Finally, he folded the papers and looked at Key.

“I will release Dr. Beanes into your care.”

“What?” General Ross roared. “That is my prisoner, Admiral.”

“And this is my fleet, General.” Admiral Cochrane turned to the men. “I would be honored to have you as my guest for the next few days. Unfortunately, my ship is full, but I believe that there will be room for the three of you on the Surprise.” George glanced at the Admiral in confusion. His ship was too small to house more people. Surely the Admiral didn’t expect him to give up his cabin to these colonials.

“If it is just the same to you, Sir, we would like to head back to Baltimore as soon as possible.” Key’s friend nodded his agreement.

“I think not. You will be our guests until after the battle. I don’t want you going back to your fair city and giving away our secrets. Now, Captain Knight. Please be kind enough to escort these gentlemen and the good doctor to your ship.”

George rose from the table and bowed to the admiral. He looked with regret at the slices of beef still on his plate.
